The media
Reading and listening to the news is a great way to improve your English, but there is more to media-related language. News allows you to better your listening skills, as well as to learn new vocabulary. During this unit we look at several short news articles and watch a video, while the grammar focus is the passive voice, a structure commonly used in news reporting.
Cinema
Are films purely for entertainment, or do most carry a message? This is one of the questions which will be discussed during this week’s telephone class. Online, we learn vocabulary related to the cinema industry and read an article about political films, while our grammar focus is the past perfect.
Facts and figures
It is not easy to say numbers, prices and dates in English, so we dedicate this lesson to them. We also spend time on two confusing verbs: borrow and lend, with special exercises that pinpoint their differences. The lesson closes with a financial news report.
English on the phone
How well do you know the phrases you need to make or deal with business calls? Do you get nervous before making or responding to a call in English? This unit looks at some of the language you need, as well as how to prepare yourself before making a call.
Online Retail
This unit deals with the language of retail and sales. We look at the effect of online shopping and learn related expressions. We then read an article from the Financial Times about Internet shopping and finish off with an activity which focuses on the use of the simple past tense.
Resolutions
We will start by watching a typical British New Year celebration on the banks of the River Thames. Then we’ll listen to Professor Richard Wiseman speak about how to achieve resolutions and go through some exercises on ways to express future intentions.
Diet and health
With obesity on the increase, and our busy lifestyles changing eating habits, perhaps we need to think a little more carefully about what we are eating. In this session we looks at what we eat, we learn how to use quantifiers correctly, and we learn what the term “5 a day” means.
Great leaders
What differentiates a manager from a leader? What does it takes to become a great leader? These are two of the questions we will discuss during this unit. We read about Richard Branson’s leadership qualities, and the grammar focus is the difference between like and as.
Government
What do you know about Queen Elizabeth II and the British Prime Minister? In this session we will look at the lives and roles of these prominent figures as well as review the present perfect tense. We finish with a news article which asks whether European monarchies should be confined to the past.
Presentations
This week we look at the language needed for the introduction of a presentation in English. Your opening is very important. If you are presenting to people you have never met before it will be the first impression your audience have of you so you need to get their attention and come across as a clear and competent speaker who knows their subject.
The future
What does the future hold for our planet? Will global warming affect our daily lives? In this session you will learn the vocabulary needed to discuss this subject and the grammar concepts related to expressing future occurrences. We will talk about what comes next and read an article about climate change in the Iberian peninsula.
Customer loyalty
With businesses offering all sorts of deals to tempt us to buy their products or use their services, this session poses the question: Is customer loyalty becoming a thing of the past? We look at both traditional methods of ensuring loyalty and the more recent method of loyalty cards.
The world of work
This unit focuses on the language needed to talk about both your company and your job. We also learn the differences between the words job and work. The grammar focus is on using the simple and progressive tenses in the right context, and we finish the unit with a video about stress at work.
