A challenge of teaching adults is finding the right system for every student. At English for Business we do not have a single method that we apply on every occasion but decide on how to work with participants once we know them well. This allows us to ascertain their learning style and then develop techniques that suit them individually.
One example is a company in the food sector we recently started teaching. We first talked to students very extensively and only afterwards divided participants into three groups. One works on a general-English syllabus because students are interested in mastering day to day conversation; another one studies with a case method in which we analyze different language situations and look for tools to overcome them; the third follows a strict business syllabus that includes product description, presentation techniques and negotiations. As a result, every group works in a different way towards clearly set objectives.
